    Directional Technologies
    Horizontal remediation well project.

Directionally drilled Horizontal Remediation Wells may dramatically reduce the time to site closure, increase the well’s zone of influence, and decrease site disruption compared to vertical well remediation systems. For example, horizontal air sparge wells have shown zones of influence 70 feet perpendicular to the well and soil vapor extraction wells have shown 120-foot perpendicular zones of influence. These may reduce remediation time while reducing maintenance, equipment, and operation costs.

The following selected representative projects have documented successful site closures using Horizontal Remediation Wells:

Six Horizontal Bio-Sparge Wells at Petroleum Products Bulk Terminal

Six bio-sparge wells were installed around the perimeter of a large subsurface petroleum release resulting from a pipeline failure at a bulk petroleum storage facility. The wells were designed to act as barriers to intercept and truncate a groundwater plume migrating toward an adjacent river. The wells prevented petroleum from impacting the river. Six additional bio-sparge wells were subsequently installed within release area, which was estimated to contain at least 30,000-gallons of various petroleum products. Non-aqueous phase liquid and dissolved phase hydrocarbons experienced significant reductions from 1995 to 2003 when the bio-sparge system was turned off.

The Battelle abstract, Post-Closure analysis proves success of Enhanced Hydrocarbon Bioremediation Using Six Horizontal Sparge Wells at Petroleum Products Bulk Terminal will give you greater insight into this successful project. The poster presentation will also be available after the conference in June of 2011.

Horizontal Well Case Study-Installation to remediated site closure

The article starts with: “A Research and Development facility in central New Jersey released several thousand gallons of gasoline to the subsurface. Environmental investigations revealed that approximately 80% of the phase separated plume existed below the building. Uninterrupted operation and prevention of vapor intrusion in the facility were key factors that dictated an alternative approach to the remedial strategy.”

The Air Sparge/ Soil Vapor Extraction wells operated for 1 ½- years and removed approximately 17,000 pounds of gasoline which resulted in a “no further action” for this site.

Four Horizontal Air Sparging and Four Soil Vapor Extraction Wells

Four horizontal air sparge and four soil vapor extraction wells were installed under a retail gas station and major traffic intersection to remediate a hydrocarbon plume.
